I believe attic fans can still be a major energy saver. In the old days,Power Efficiency Guide Review almost everyone had attic fans, or at least window fans. Now I will give it to you that we didn't have air conditioning, so the big window fan was a heaven send. Forty five years later, Mom still has the same fan. I built a custom house and included an attic fan at the far gable end of the garage and of course the neighbors said it would never work. They later found out it was a great decision. I had it set to come on according to where I had the thermostat set. I also had a trap door in the hall of the house that could be raised and lowered from inside the walk in closet. It was fantastic. I had the attic fan I wanted and there was no fan noise coming from the hall like the older ones used to make. When we were using the air conditioner and didn't need the fan I left the trap door down and the attic fan would kick off and on as it needed. It would then pull the hot air out of the attic, which helped even more to keep utility bills down. In the cool of the spring, or the cool of the fall you could open the trap door and open some windows and you had the greatest outside air that you can all remember. If you get a chance to add one to your house, forget the friendly negative advice from your neighbors and install one in the gable end of you house, at the farthest point, and let it do it's magic. You'll have cool breezes and no noise to keep you awake while enjoying lower utility bills. Talk about the best of both worlds.
